Essential Oil for Migraine and Flu Relief

In times of flu, essential oils can provide comfort and symptomatic relief of headache, migraine, running nose, blocked nose and even body ache.

First, here are some basic information:

Essential oils
Essential oils are different from what we usually think of as oils. Most evaporate quickly and have a very light texture. They’re found in various parts of plants including flowers, leaves, seeds, roots, and bark. Very few essential oils are safe to be applied directly to the skin. Most should be mixed in carrier oils that “carry” the essence to the skin. Essential oils can also be added to lotions and butters such as cocoa butter, aloe butter, and shea butter.

Carrier oils:
Carrier oils are gentle, pure oils. Some of the most commonly used carrier oils are sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, and jojoba oil.

Topical Application


Always dilute essential oils before applying on your skin. Apply mixture at the affected area, or the temples, at the back of the neck, on the wrists, on the soles of the feet.

An effective dilution for most aromatherapy applications is 3 percent. For more concentrated blends, up to 5% is considered safe. A 1% dilution should be used on children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with health concerns.

Considering 1ml is approximately 20 drops,
5% dilution: 30 drops essential oil per 30ml of carrier oil


Recipes for Topical Blends

Headache Blend 1: 5 drops Peppermint, 5 drops Lavender, 10ml Carrier Oil

Headache Blend 2:
8 drops Lavender, 2 drops Chamomile, 10ml Carrier Oil

Headache Blend 3: 6 drops Peppermint, 4 drops Rosemary, 10ml Carrier Oil

Muscle Ache or Sprain: 5 drops Marjoram, 5 drops Chamomile, 10ml Carrier Oil

Tight Muscles:
4 drops Lavender, 4 drops Rosemary, and 2 drops of Ginger, 10ml Carrier Oil

Muscle Spasms:
4 drops Marjoram, 4 drops Chamomile, 2 drops Ginger, 10ml Carrier Oil
